AV-Comparatives gave nine vendors, including Webroot, its highest award in its July 2012 Anti-Phishing Test, in which Webroot took 9th place among 18 products tested for efficacy in blocking phishing websites. In AV-Comparatives’s Performance Test for October 2012, Webroot had the best PCMark score, having the lightest impact out of 20 products tested on a Windows 7 64-bit machine.

Webroot had the worst results out of 20 products tested by AV-Comparatives in the September 2012 File Detection Test of Malicious Software, both in terms of malware detection rates and false alarms. Webroot detected less than 80 percent of viral samples, much worse than the 94.4 percent rate of the second-lowest detecting product. Webroot inappropriately flagged 210 clean files, raising as many false positives as the other 19 products tested combined. According to AV-comparatives, the “results and misses have been confirmed with several tests and also by the vendor.”

PC Magazine has awarded Webroot SecureAnywhere 19 times with Editor’s Choice and Security Product of the Year, its highest award given to security and software programs. In PC Magazine’s test for 2013, Webroot was found by PC Magazine staff to have the best score in malware blocking tests, malware removal tests, speed of scans, and installation speed. In the 2014 test, PCMag found “Webroot’s detection rate of 89 percent and overall malware cleanup score of 6.6 points are both tops among products tested using this same malware collection.”

Gartner listed Webroot in its Visionary Quadrant in its 2014 assessment of Endpoint Protection Platforms.

In 2014, PassMark Software, a software and hardware performance benchmarking company, benchmarked Webroot SecureAnywhere Business Endpoint Protection and Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus using  performance metrics. In both tests, Webroot products were found to outperform competitors in a variety of metrics, including scan times, CPU usage, and others, earning the highest overall score in both tests.

During November 2016’s evaluation of mobile security products for Android AV-TEST has given Webroot’s SecureAnywhere Mobile product a “Protection Score” of 3.5 out of 6, placing it near the bottom of all 26 products evaluated in this test in terms of protection against malware. Both the “Detection of the latest Android malware in real-time” and “Detection of the latest Android malware discovered in the last 4 weeks” scores were below the “Industry Average” score.

In the October 2017 AV-Comparatives performed a “Head-to-Head Comparison” between products from VIPRE and Webroot, the Webroot SecureAnywhere product was only able to achieve 86.4% “Protection Rate”, compared to VIPRE Cloud’s 100% rate. The test was performed using a test set of 316 live malicious URLs found in the field.

During the January 2018 test of 84 various Android antimalware apps by AV-Comparatives, Webroot Security Premier has detected 99.7% of all antimalware samples, placing it below 30 other tested apps which showed better detection rates.

Off-duty Chicago cop faces reckless homicide, DUI charges in crash that killed woman

An off-duty Chicago police officer was charged Tuesday with reckless homicide in a crash that killed a 35-year-old woman sitting inside a South Side restaurant earlier this week.

Terrance Finley, 24, faces one felony count of reckless homicide with a motor vehicle and one of aggravated driving under the influence resulting in a deadly accident, according to a Tuesday news release from Chicago police.

Finley, who lives in the 1900 block of West 83rd Street, was also accused of a misdemeanor count of DUI and was cited for failing to reduce speed, police said. He is scheduled to appear in bond court on Tuesday.

About 2:45 a.m. Sunday, Finley allegedly drove his black Toyota Corolla into the side of Tony’s Philly Steak in the 1700 block of West 87th Street in Gresham. The vehicle struck Marquita Reed, 35, who was waiting with her friends for their food, police said.

Police said Reed was pinned under the car until first responders freed her and brought her to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy Monday found she died of multiple injuries from an automobile striking a pedestrian, and her death was ruled an accident, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Her friend, a 35-year-old woman, was struck too and brought to the hospital in a neck brace. She also suffered a leg injury, and was reported in good condition, police said.

Finley told investigators he had been driving east on 87th Street when a car going west on 87th turned on South Wood Street and cut him off. He said he swerved to avoid the other car, police said.

Police said Finley registered a blood alcohol level of 0.083, which is over the legal limit of 0.08.

He is a full-time officer who makes an annual salary of $68,616, according to the city employee data portal.

Evidence in the case shows the FBI discovered multiple images and videos of child pornography on electronic devices belonging to Beasley after executing a search warrant at his home. Many involved children younger than age 12.

Beasley also must serve 20 years on probation after his release from prison.

Feisty Virginia Primaries Closely Watched for National Trend

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia’s highly charged legislative primary Tuesday is being closely watched as a possible political barometer for the coming presidential election year.

The state’s 2017 elections were an early warning signal that a blue wave of opposition to President Donald Trump was headed for the 2018 U.S. midterms. This year’s contests legislative could offer strong clues about larger trends in 2020.

Normally sleepy affairs, this year’s primary contests feature plenty of drama as moderates in both parties take fire from their outer flanks. All 140 legislative seats are up for grabs this year and Virginia is the only state whose legislature has a reasonable chance of flipping partisan control. Republicans currently have narrow majorities in both the House and Senate.

On the GOP side, lingering resentment over last year’s vote in Virginia to expand Medicaid is helping fuel unusually divisive primary contests. Meanwhile, an unusually high number of Democratic incumbents are being challenged by liberal newcomers who aren’t shy about attacking their opponents as ethically compromised and out of step with the party’s base.

Democrats are hoping they can continue a three-year winning streak, which has been powered in large part by suburban voters unhappy with Trump who are fleeing the GOP.

But the party lost a major advantage earlier this year when its top three statewide office holders became ensnared in scandal. A racist yearbook photo surfaced in February and almost forced Gov. Ralph Northam from office. Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax was then accused by two women of sexual assault, which he denies. And Attorney General Mark Herring revealed that he’d worn blackface during his college days after calling for Northam to resign for similar behavior.

On Tuesday, two of the state’s most powerful senators will try to hold on to their seats. Democratic Senate Minority Leader Dick Saslaw and Republican Sen. Emmett Hanger, who combined have more than seven decades of experience as lawmakers, are both facing spirited opponents.

Saslaw, a canny veteran of Capitol politics who is ardently pro-business and chummy with Republicans, hasn’t faced a primary challenger in 40 years. This year he has two.

One of those challengers, 39-year-old human rights lawyer Yasmine Taeb, has been aggressive in painting Saslaw as too conservative and too cozy with special interests.

Hanger was key in getting Medicaid expansion passed in Virginia last year, even defeating his own party’s plan to derail the effort during one committee hearing. His opponent, Tina Freitas, said Hanger has betrayed his constituents by supporting Medicaid and said he’s not conservative enough on guns or abortion. The state’s hospitals have spent heavily to help Hanger hold on to the GOP nomination.

Similarly themed races are playing out in other parts of the state. Republican Del. Bob Thomas, who also voted for Medicaid expansion, is trying to hold on to this Fredericksburg-area seat.

And Del. Lee Carter, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist who was one of the biggest surprise winners in 2017, is trying to fend off a more moderate primary opponent.

Tuesday’s vote will also determine if one of Virginia’s most colorful politicians can make a comeback. Joe Morrissey, a former state lawmaker who used to spend his days at the state Capitol and his nights in jail after being accused of having sex with his teenage secretary, is looking to unseat incumbent Sen. Roslyn Dance in a Richmond-area Democratic primary.

There’s also plenty of local action in some of the state’s biggest counties. In Fairfax County, multiple candidates are running for the Democratic nomination to lead the Board of Supervisors. And two prosecutors’ races in northern Virginia have been flooded with cash from a political action committee financed by liberal billionaire George Soros on behalf of two challengers say they want to implement criminal justice reforms to make the system fairer to those accused.

NBA Finals 2019: Warriors may have just begun greatest comeback of their reign, yet it feels completely empty

TORONTO – Take the context out of the moment and it was a time for celebration.

They were down six with two and a half minutes left, an elimination game on the road in front of a Toronto Raptors crowd that was delirious at the possibility of celebrating the franchise’s first championship.

Then the Golden State Warriors channeled all the rise-up-to-the-moment greatness that’s defined their five-year run as one of the greatest dynasties the NBA has ever seen: A Klay Thompson 3. A defensive stop. A Stephen Curry 3 to tie it up with 1:22 left. A defensive stop. Another Thompson 3, this one a stepback 57.6 seconds left, to take the lead. And then, on the final possession, lockdown team defense on Kawhi Leonard that caused him to pass out of the double-team, and then a heroic defensive play by Draymond Green to catch a piece of what could have been a series-winning 3 by Kyle Lowry at the buzzer. The Warriors were heading back to the Bay for Game 6, one more game at Oracle Arena after what Green called the greatest, gutsiest win of the Warriors’ run.

But, then, the context: Kevin Durant, looking spry in his first minutes in more than a month, falling to the ground in the second quarter. Durant holding his leg – his Achilles tendon, specifically. Andre Iguodala helping Durant to the locker room with Curry at their side. Durant leaving the arena in crutches and a walking boot. The announcement that Durant would have an MRI on Tuesday to officially diagnose his injury, and then the reports that the Warriors believe that MRI will confirm the worst possible result: A torn right Achilles tendon.

A big-time 106-105 Warriors win – the type of win that could spur one of the greatest comebacks in NBA Finals history – that didn’t feel like a win at all.

“An incredible win and a horrible loss at the same time,” a solemn head coach Steve Kerr said afterward.

Without context, you’d expect celebration: A big-boy win where the Warriors outran and outshot the Raptors in the first half then grinded out a win in the slower, more physical second half. A historic 3-point shooting night – 20 made 3-pointers, the second-most in Finals history – that reminded us why we call them the Splash Brothers. A bevy of timely defensive plays, none bigger than the team defense on the final possession that was capped by Green flying at Lowry and getting a piece of his 3 at the buzzer.

And yet, because of that context, what we had instead was a general manager of one of the most successful sports franchises in modern American sports history, sitting at the postgame podium, in tears.

“He was cleared to play tonight; that was a collaborative decision,” Warriors general manager Bob Myers said. “I don’t believe there’s anybody to blame, but I understand in this world and if you have to, you can blame me. I run our basketball operations department. And to tell you something about Kevin Durant. Kevin Durant loves to play basketball, and the people that questioned whether he wanted to get back to this team were wrong.”

At times, Myers was choking on his own words. It was one of the rawest, authentic displays of human emotion that you’ll ever see on a stage like this. Myers pointed the finger at himself – If you must assign blame, the buck stops with me – and yet there was another bogeyman out there that Myers and other Warriors pointed at, too. That bogeyman was the people who doubted Durant’s heart, who wondered why he was still on the sidelines a month after straining his calf, who ratcheted up the external pressure on the Warriors, backs against the wall, to get perhaps the best player on earth back on the court.

Durant’s public image has traveled the gamut: From good-guy K.D., the guy who dedicated his MVP speech to his mother – “You da real MVP” – to villain K.D., the guy who ruined the NBA by joining the already-established Warriors dynasty. On Monday night he was neither. He was just Kevin Durant, a human being who was going through pain and uncertainty.

“He’s one of the most misunderstood people,” Myers said. “He’s a good teammate, he’s a good person. It’s not fair. I’m lucky to know him.”

We now have a series – an actual NBA Finals, not the Warriors coronation of the past two years. That should be celebrated, I suppose. What we might also have is the ultimate test of this Warriors dynasty: The biggest hole they’ve ever faced in a Finals, and the pressure of knowing this could be the end of their run. If the best stories combine low lows with high highs, the Warriors are writing one helluva story.

As Monday night turned into Tuesday morning, though, it was tough to see those highs.

“It’s very deflating,” Thompson said. “It’s hard to even celebrate this win.”

But then he added on a note of optimism – something that this team must feel if they’re going to turn Durant’s injury into the team’s inspiration: “We do it for Kevin,” Thompson said. “We do it for K.”

When is E3 2019? Full schedule, UK timetable for Nintendo, Ubisoft and Square Enix and game announcement trailers

The Electronic Entertainment Expo or E3 for short, is annually the biggest gaming date on the calendar.

While there will once again be dozens of major announcements, this year’s will be a bit different – Sony is simply not turning up.

Despite releasing a statement on the existence of the PS5 and how it will have the backwards compatibility that players desperately wanted it will not be using E3 as a platform to crank up the excitement.

Even without Sony, there is enough gaming excitement to go round and another game which will likely take lots of headlines again in 2019 is CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077.

Other big titles will be The Last of Us 2 and Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding, a game where details have been drip fed to the public for years and is expected (update: IT IS ACTUALLY LAUNCHING IN NOVEMBER) to launch in November.

On Monday there will be conferences from Ubisoft who will unveil Watch Dogs 3 and Square Enix who will give us a first look at its Avengers title.

When is E3 2019

E3 2019 will take place from June 11-13 2019 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Downtown LA.

Where is E3 2019?

E3 2019 will take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center, where the event is held most years.

It has on some occasions been held elsewhere.

The 1997 and 1998 E3 conventions were held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

Ubisoft at E3

On Monday evening it is Ubisoft’s time to take to the stage at E3 2019 where the company will announce updates to your favorite games, such as Ghost Recon Breakpoint, The Division 2, and For Honor. Expect a few surprises too, one in the form of Watch Dogs 3.

The Ubisoft conference is at 8pm BST on Monday June 10.

Square Enix at E3

It’s a big conference for Square Enix as it plans to reveal more of the long-awaited Final Fantasy 7 remake and the much anticipated Marvel’s Avengers title.

Square Enix will also likely show off titles announced during previous streams and conferences, like Oninaki from Tokyo RPG Factory, Babylon’s Fall from PlatinumGames, and Dying Light 2 from Techland.

The Square Enix press conference is at 2 am BST on Tuesday morrning.

Nintendo at E3

Nintendo will be in attendance at E3 and the creative pioneers will once again be hosting a special Nintendo Direct E3 livestream rather than holding a live press conference. Last year the comp0any officially revealed Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and this year there will likely be more details on Pokemon Sword and Shield and the long-awaited Luigi’s Mansion 3.

The Nintendo Switch has made a name for itself for boasting a catalogue of much-love third party games including L.A. Noire, Dark Souls and AC III.

Time: YouTube at 12pm ET/9am PT/5pm BST on Tuesday, June 11

Microsoft at E3

Sony being absent from E3 this year gives Microsoft a real chance to steal the show and that’s exactly what the company needs after the PS4 has comfortably and consistently outsold the Xbox One.

With the knowledge of the PS5 now out there, Microsoft can use E3 as a platform to ramp up the excitement for Xbox One’s successor.

The next Xbox console is still titled Project Scarlett and is confirmed to be released at Christmas 2020.

The new device will be four times more powerful than the Xbox One X and powered by an AMD chip. Microsoft said the new console will be able to offer frame rates up to 120 frames per second, or twice the average TV.

“A console should be built and optimized for one thing and one thing only: Gaming,” Xbox head Phil Spencer said during the company’s presentation.

Keynote time: Sunday, June 9 at 1pm PST/ 4pm EST/ and 9pm BST

Bethesda at E3

As expected there was no update on Elder Scrolls 6, so, for now all we still know is that the game exists and absolutely nothing else.

Things which were confirmed were a Doom Eternal release date (November 22) a Fallout 76 Battle Royale mode (of course) and a new Elder Scrolls game called Blades coming to Nintendo Switch.

For those more into horror and a fan of Bethesda’s The Evil Within and its sequel (both developed by Tango Gameworks) then forthcoming title Ghostwire Tokyo could be the one for you. Shinji Mikami and Ikumi Nakamura from Tango Gameworks mentioned this latest effort was less of a survival horror game and maybe more paranormal.

Games to watch out for at E3 2019

Cyberpunk 2077

The bad news off the bat is that the game will once again not be playable. Projekt Red has confirmed that those visiting the booth will be able to see it in action.

CD Projekt’s president and CEO Adam Kicińsk previously described E3 2019 as “the most important one ever”, promising that the developers have “really prepared a strong show”.

On Sunday night the game got a release date – April 16 2020, and a new trailer showed us that actual Keanu Reeves will be in the game.

Watch Dogs 3

It’s fair to say the original Watch Dogs wasn’t the game everyone wanted. To counter this, 2016’s Watch Dogs 2 was a gloriously colourful affair set against the backdrop of San Francisco. If the rumours and leaks are to be believed (and with Ubisfot they usually are) it looks as if Watch Dogs 3 will be set a lot closer to home – in London. Rumours suggest that the game will arrive in Q4 and will get a full blow-out at E3 in June.

The Ubisoft conference is at 8pm BST on Monday June 10.

Star Wars-Jedi: Fallen Order

During Microsoft’s Xbox press conference–the first of many E3 livestreams scheduled to air over the next week–the company revealed a new trailer for Star Wars-Jedi: Fallen Order. Those hoping that despite the long-awaited Star Wars RPG being cancelled that this new title might be similar will have been left disappointed. Fallen order is essentially The Force Unleashed reskinned for the current generation of consoles.

Fallen Order focuses on the adventure of a Jedi Padawan named Cal Kestis, who escaped Order 66 and now lives as a fugitive salvager. His peaceful life comes to an abrupt end when he’s discovered, though, and he has to go on the run.

Harry Potter

Late last year a trailer for a harry Potter game appeared online. It could have been fake, simply a mod for another title, but Warner Bros removed it sharpishly. Understandably, this created suspicion. The trailer showed a playable fifth-year Hogwarts student who was customisable and very much looked like a proper RPG type game. Will it get an official reveal this year? Hopefully.

Death Stranding

It finally has a date. At the end of May we got a release date (November 8) in a 9 minute trailer and as expected it will be a PS4 exclusive. The trailer was mainly gameplay but it still gave little insight to the narrative. There will be more details at E3.

Marvel’s Avengers

It’s been confirmed for some time but other than that there’s been nothing expect a teaser trailer that showed nothing. Square Enix, the studio behind the game has confirmed its title and that there will be a worldwide reveal at the event.

The Square Enix live event is at 6PM PT on June 10 which is 2am here.

Watch the first trailer for Square Enix’s Avengers game, coming on May 15th, 2020

Square Enix’s Avengers game finally has a trailer, revealed this evening during the publisher’s E3 2019 press conference. The game was first announced two and a half years ago, when Marvel Entertainment revealed it was working with Square Enix and its studios Eidos Montréal (Deus Ex) and Crystal Dynamics, the developer behind the Tomb Raider reboot. News about the title has been sparse in the years since, but tonight we got our first look the superhero game and a lot more details.

Notably, the character models for the Avengers are drastically different than their Marvel Cinematic Universe counterparts. So no Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark or Chris Evans as Captain America. Instead, Crystal Dynamics has created custom looks for each character. The plot line seems to very loosely borrow some narrative threads from Marvel films like Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War. In the game, the Avengers are blamed for an attack and question the responsibility and accountability of superheroes in modern society. Yet it sounds like the storyline will be unique to the Marvel universe.

Among the playable characters includes Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor. Crystal Dynamics as recruited some notable voice acting talent, including Troy Baker and Nolan North, to voice the five heroes. The studio says the game will have four-player, online co-op play, and there will also be numerous games in the series, with a multi-year planned for the narrative. The game will be available on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia, and it’s releasing on May 15th, 2020.

Earthquake rattles Cleveland area, overwhelms Eastlake’s emergency dispatch system

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake centered 20 miles northeast of Cleveland rattled some buildings in the area and overwhelmed one small city’s emergency communications system.

It was not immediately clear what if any damage was caused by the quake. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 10:50 a.m. and was centered a couple miles north-northwest of Eastlake, Ohio, a city of about 20,000 on Lake Erie.

“Please do not call dispatch unless it’s an emergency,” Eastlake Mayor Dennis Morley said in a Facebook post. “They are overwhelmed with calls. It was a 4.0 magnitude earthquake and safety forces are working to help where needed.”

The Perry Nuclear Plant, about 20 miles northeast of the Eastlake, said the plant appeared to be unaffected by the temblor.

“Workers are conducting a comprehensive visual inspection to assure there is no change in the condition of plant equipment,” plant managers said in a statement.

The state Transportation Department shared some very shaky video from its highway cameras.

“Did you feel that rumble this morning Cleveland?” the department tweeted. “Well if you missed it, we caught this morning’s earthquake on multiple #OHGO cameras. Check it out!”

The quake caught the attention of many on social media.

“I live on a busy road & heard a rumble,” Amy Marie posted on Twitter. “Thought it was just a big rig with a heavy load tumbling down the street. Then my walls and pipes made a groan and pop, then every item of clothing in my closet swayed wildly and fast!”

2019 Women’s World Cup scores, highlights: Canada squeaks by, Japan underwhelms, Argentina gets historic point

Day 4 of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France featured a two-game slate with two potential contenders opening their campaigns against slightly inferior opponents. When the dust settled, neither team looked particularly sharp as only one goal was scored on the day. Japan, winners of the 2011 Women’s World Cup, were held scoreless against an upstart Argentina team that spent over two years (from June 2015 to October 2017) without playing an official match. Canada used a Kadeisha Buchanan header to squeak by Cameroon in the late game.

Here’s what you need to know from Monday’s World Cup games:

Women’s World Cup scores for Monday, June 10

• Argentina 0, Japan 0
• Canada 1 Cameroon 0

Canada dominates game, barely gets by on score

Canada produced more than enough chances to win comfortably against Cameroon, but only found the back of the net once. The No. 5 team in FIFA’s rankings had 74 percent of the ball, nearly three times more passes, 12 more shots and were simply better on the night. The Canadians moved the ball around at will but only put 25 percent of their 16 shots went on frame. Canada’s struggles almost felt similar to what Japan experienced in the early game against Argentina (more on that below), but the only difference was that they found the breakthrough 45 minutes in via the head of Kadeisha Buchanan. Better to have struggled to score in this game than more important ones down the road. The important thing is getting the three points and setting themselves up well to potentially win the group. They knocked on the door plenty and just scored once, but the chances in the final third are an encouraging sign for a team that didn’t score in its final World Cup tune-up.

Argentina makes history while Japan shows inexperience

Argentina’s surprising scoreless draw against mighty Japan saw the South American nation earn its first ever point at a Women’s World Cup, and they celebrated it as if it were a victory. For a team that went more than two years (from June 2015 to October 2017) between playing an official competitive match, Monday was a monumental day. Argentina had just one shot on goal but buckled down all game long, conceding 72 percent of the possession and completing nearly 400 (!) less passes. Japan controlled the ball in Argentina’s half for a great deal, yet it could not break down the defense. Aldana Cometti and Agustina Barroso were quick to react at the back, and while it felt like the Japanese would eventually break things open, they never got a golden chance in the second half.

Japan won the tournament in 2011 and finished in second in 2015, and the early impression this time around is that maybe it doesn’t have what it takes to make the final due to the turnover on the roster. Japan entered the 2015 tourney with the second-oldest roster, and this time around it has the second-youngest roster among all 24 teams, with 14 players aged 23 or younger. The lack of veteran leadership showed. They were solid on the ball in the middle of the park, but when it came to finding teammates in space to enter the box, they were way off.

Perhaps the expectations were a bit too high for this Japan team. After leaving a sour opening impression in France, they’ll look to bounce back against Scotland, where a loss would put them on the brink of elimination. Meanwhile, Argentina knows that if it can win one of its last two games, it will have a decent chance of making the round of 16. Argentina has to be thrilled with what it already accomplished — after losing its first World Cup opener 6-0 to Japan in 2003 and then 11-0 to Germany in 2007, this result is Argentina’s biggest result in its young history.

Helicopter Crash-Lands On Top Of Building In Midtown, 1 Dead

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A helicopter crashed on top of a building in Midtown on Monday afternoon.

It happened at around 1:43 p.m., according to FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro.

The helicopter was flying in restricted air space and in rain and fog when it crashed.

More than 100 emergency responders rushed to the scene at 787 Seventh Ave. between 51st and 52nd Streets. The building is 54 stories tall.

The pilot, identified as Tim McCormack, was killed. The East Clinton, New York, Volunteer Fire Department said he served as chief there for 10 years. Before joining the East Clinton VFD, he was a member of the LaGrange Fire Department. With 15 years of experience flying helicopters and single-engine airplanes, he was certified as a flight instructor last year, according to Federal Aviation Administration records.

McCormack radioed before the crash that he was in trouble, sources told CBS2. Paul Dudley, the airport manager in Linden, N.J., where the helicopter flew out of, said, “McCormack is an experienced pilot and very well respected in the aircraft community,” adding he worked for an executive and was flying his helicopter at the time of the crash.

Dudley said he assumes that there was a mechanical or weather-related issue and that McCormack was trying to land on top of the building to spare the people on the ground, CBS2’s Lisa Rozner reported.

There is no helipad on top of the building’s roof.

The FAA said the aircraft was an Agusta A109E helicopter and the NTSB will investigate the cause of crash. FAA air traffic controllers “did not handle the flight.” The helicopter was registered to American Continental Properties, LLC.

That model helicopter, which is used for executive travel, was flying in a restricted flight area when it crashed. Mayor Bill de Blasio said officials were investigating whether or not the chopper had received approval from flight controllers to go into the restricted zone.

The building was evacuated.

“There was a shake and then a noise and then we just evacuated,” one man said. “That was about it. We just heard the ground shake, like it was an earthquake and then we went back to business. Then we got the notice to evacuate.”

“You could smell smoke. Not heavy smoke, but the smell of what I describe — burnt construction material started to come downstairs,” another man said.

“We had a very strange, very troubling incident this afternoon here in Manhattan,” Mayor de Blasio said.

De Blasio emphasized that “there is no indication at this time that this was an act of terror and there is no ongoing threat to New York City based on all the information that we have right now.”

“We do not know the cause of this incident,” de Blasio said. “This could’ve been a much worse incident, and thank God that no other people were injured in this absolutely shocking, stunning incident.”

De Blasio praised the “extraordinary effort” of the first responders.

Nigro said firefighters were on the scene of the crash about four minutes after receiving the 911 call of the crash. They deployed special hoses and pumps to get water from over 700 feet below to fight the fire.

“We were able to put water on the fire quite quickly. Unfortunately, we did find a victim with the helicopter, who, as the mayor stated, we presume is the pilot,” Nigro said.

“What we know is that at approximately 1:32 this afternoon, the helicopter took off from the 34th Street heliport and about 11 minutes later crashed on the roof,” Police Commissioner James O’Neill said. That heliport is located on Manhattan’s East Side. Officials believe – but have not confirmed – the helicopter may have been attempting to return to its home base in Linden, New Jersey, which is why it may have been crossing Manhattan.

O’Neill said he was “not sure” yet why the helicopter was flying in wet and foggy weather.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who happened to be at an event nearby and got to the scene quickly, said that a helicopter made a “forced” or “emergency” landing on top of the building. Officials later described the incident as a “hard landing” at a high rate of speed.

“The preliminary information is that there was a helicopter that made a forced landing, an emergency landing or landed on the roof of the building for one reason or another. There was a fire that happened when the helicopter hit the roof. People who were in the building said they felt the building shake. The fire department believes the fire is under control. There may have been casualties involved in people in the helicopter,” Cuomo said. “We don’t know what caused the helicopter to land on top of the building but people in the building itself, nobody has been hurt.”

The damage was primarily contained to the building’s roof. In the midst of the chaos and confusion, Nicholas Estevez found a sharp piece of debris in the rain on the street below, CBS2’s Ali Bauman reported.

“I saw people running like crazy out of the building and people running everywhere,” he said.

“If you’re a New Yorker you have a level of PTSD from 9/11 and I remember that morning all too well. So as soon as you hear an aircraft hit a building, I think my mind goes where every New Yorker’s mind goes,” Cuomo said.

West 50th Street-West 52nd Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues was closed to vehicles and pedestrians, the NYPD said. Other streets near the crash site were closed but later reopened.

President Donald Trump tweeted praise for first responders, saying they did “phenomenal job,” adding “The Trump Administration stands ready should you need anything at all.”
